Stress is everywhere! The right amount can motivate us and keep us moving in the right direction. Too much can shut us down and seriously impact our learning.
Learning how to regulate stress and focus through mindfulness is an essential first step in education, and can begin at any age! Before we get into the specifics of any reading, language or math difficulties, we can learn some simple and effective mindfulness tools to feel more empowered and in control of our learning and keep our thinking brains turned on!!
Mindfulness teaches us essential tools in and outside of the classroom. Studies show that mindfulness is an effective tool for ADHD management and according to neuroscience research, mindfulness practices dampen activity in our amygdala and increase the connections between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. Both of these parts of the brain help us to be less reactive to stressors and to recover better from stress when we experience it.
When we are calm..
-We can keep our “thinking brains” turned on
-We react better to stress and frustration
-We can take in new information more easily
-We can recall information more easily and access things learned in the past.
Become a Mindful Family!!
As parents, without calm, our children won’t hear our words of wisdom, our homework help, or our reassurances. Through mindfulness, we can teach our children how to regulate their own emotions…but we may need some tips and tricks too!
As a family, you will be introduced to mindfulness practices that you can build on over the five sessions, and gradually feel more balanced and present as a family.
Session 1: Mindfulness and the ‘Window of Tolerance”
Session 2: Mindfulness and the Brain
Session 3: Mindfulness and Emotions
